This is a feel-good family film with a naïve optimism akin to “Forrest Gump”. Stiller’s Walter Mitty doesn’t have an ounce of cynicism in him. Some can call it sappy but I found this one sweet. I walked out feeling better about the world.
Stiller’s Mitty is a nebbish guy who escapes in this daydreams where he’s a hero who saves the day and wins the girl of his dreams, Kristen Wiig (who competes against herself in “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”.) She’s the straight woman here.
When Mitty and his co-worker face firing by their new bosses, led by the snarky Adam Scott, he goes off on a globe-trotting mission and ends up on a real-life heroic adventure.
Patton Oswalt is perfect as his more-heard-than-seen personal counselor at E-Harmony.com. By the way, this concierge dating service didn’t exist til Stiller stretched the truth in this film. Now, E-Harmony actually has a personal date advisor for-hire. Shirley MacLaine has a small but winning role as Mitty’s mom. Sean Penn has an equally small , though pivotal role.
The road- trip part of the movie has exquisite scenery. The soundtrack is awesome. Nice guys finish first in this one. A good one for the whole family.
